“You know I could have stayed at the house while you go and celebrate your team’s Super Bowl victory? I wouldn’t have minded honestly.”
The scene opens to the front seat of a black 2018 Audi S5 where Joshua Samson, Esquire is seated on the passenger side while Astrid Sedin seated behind the steering wheel of the vehicle. The normally designer suit wearing Anarchy General Manager Extraordinaire is dressed down in denim jeans and a what appears to be a black t-shirt underneath a black leather jacket. On top of his head, he sports a black cap with the San Francisco Forty-Niners logo on it. With a puppy dog plea expression, he looks over at his driving fiancee who is dressed in black skinny jeans and a black fleece North Face jacket with a Philadelphia Eagles jersey underneath.
”I would be doing this for you if it was the Niners. Besides, we’re going to have dinner with my sister tonight in the city. You two need to get to know each other a bit better. Besides… we have to tell her and my uncle about the engagement. I don’t think it’s public knowledge to those who don’t watch EHWF programming.”
”More reason for me to stay at the house and get rested.”
”Yeah… but that would’ve meant I’d have to deal with the traffic going into the city twice. The city is going to be nuts and I might only be able to able to get a parking spot once. We’re going to be parking in the garage near my uncle’s firm. It’s only a short walk from there and we got a reserved spot. And then we’ll take an uber to the restaurant.”
”Am I living in some kind of Bizarro world or do you actually have a sound plan of attack, Lil’ Bit?”
”I have a plan. If you grew up in this area and went into the city a lot, you too would understand why I wouldn’t want to come back to get you or make you pay an exorbitant fare with a cab or Uber. Trust me… I’m smart.”
Astrid came to a stop at a light and turned towards him, smiling from ear to ear as they waited for the light to turn green.
”Well don’t get too smart ‘cause then I’d be out of a job.”
”Oh that’s nothing that you need to worry about. Business was never my forte even though that’s what I studied in college. I only did it to try and make my parents accept me but when they showed their true colors, it was too late to change my major.”
”It’s weird how we allow our parents to fashion our life. I remember when I was your age, well just a tad bit younger when I was in college, I thought nothing about getting a degree. I just wanted to join the Army and follow in their footsteps...become some big time Call of Duty war hero.”
He slightly chuckles as he allows his gaze to leave his beautiful bride-to-be and watch the pedestrians crossing the crosswalk in front of their car.
”Although I had a lot to do with it, it was them...their marriage...that lead me to eventually marry Kelli….”
”Do we really have to talk about her right now? I get that it needs to be talked about… but I’m behind the wheel of a car, there’s a crowd of people up there and I have a short fuse. Can it wait till I park?”
He pulls his attention from outside, back into the car, to gaze upon Astrid once again.
”Astrid, I just want to fully clear the air. I want to impress upon you how serious and in love with you that I truly am. I need you to know that after you there will be no more.”
Astrid still had a smile upon her face as one hand came off the steering wheel and gently caresses his cheek. Joshua exhales heavily.
”I know you do. But give me five minutes to get to the garage.”
The light turned green and Astrid replaces her hand where it came from before continuing to drive.
”Fair enough. I didn’t mean to bring down the mood.”
”It’s not that. I just… don’t trust myself to not get mad with the power of 354 horses at my fingertips.”
A few minutes later, Astrid pulled into the garage and parked in one of the reserved spots for her uncle’s law firm. Undoing her seatbelt, Astrid turned to face Joshua.
”OK… I’m ready for it.”
Removing his own seatbelt, he stroked his five o’clock shadow a few times.
”So when Kelli and I met she was just a young wrestler training at the training facility of my last company I worked for. I had just starting to make the transition from color commentator to managing. Of course it didn’t take long for the two of us to form a close relationship. We are both military brats, college educated, and enormous passion for wrestling. It was almost a damn dream come true.”
”So then what went wrong? Why is she now the batshit crazy bitch we all know and despise?”
”Well as smart and athletically talented Kelli is, the company pushed her Killjoy persona as a hardcore/extreme wrestler. The crazier the match, the more dangerous the bump, Kelli was willing to be a part of it. Of course that lead to her self-medicating. First it was just excessive drinking then painkillers. Once that wasn’t enough, she turned to harder, illegal drugs.”
His brow frowned as the mental image played in his mind’s eye.
”So… that’s some deep shit. I’m sorry that you had to go through all of that. But do know that my vice is and probably only ever will be alcohol. I know that really doesn’t make you feel any better.”’
She frowned a bit as her hands rested in her lap.
”I’m not blaming the liquor. Hell, you know I like to turn up with the best of them. And that was probably why I didn’t see Kelli’s issues when they were happening. We were on top on the world in our careers and I saw so much of my parents in us. Or so I thought I did. I think the thought of marriage was what I wanted at that time, no matter the bullshit I was dragged through.”
”Did you love her though? Do you still love her? Or did you just want to be married because you wanted to be like your parents? I’m just… trying to figure out why she’s coming after me.”
She kept her head lowered as she twiddled her thumbs around.
”Yes, I did love her. I still love, Kelli, and don’t think I’ll ever stop. But not in that way. I stopped loving her that when she stopped loving herself. She got so bad that she tried to hurt herself so many times. I don’t know if they were cries for help or attention seeking but I was there for her each time until I just couldn’t be.”
Resting his head back onto the headrest, Joshua closes his eyes, exhaling heavily.
”One night I came back from a tour in Japan and found her in a closet….belt wrapped around her neck….coked out of her mind. Luckily, I guess, I had gotten there just in time because the EMTs said if I would have been a minute or two later, she would have been dead. It was right then and there I knew there was nothing I could do to save her from herself.”
It is clear the normally braggadocious mouthpiece of the Samson Family was choking back a flood of emotions. Opening his eyes, he stared out the front window.
”I really tried, Astrid. I tried to love her. I tried to get her professional help. I did everything I could humanly do….”
Astrid quickly moved over into his lap, her back against the window as he legs hungover into the driver’s seat.
”I know you did everything you could because that’s the type of guy that you are. You’re selfless… unlike myself… and you put me, Bill and the others before your own self. You have to deal with so much crap that it’s not funny and most of it is probably my own doing. I don’t know how you put up with me.”
She put her forehead to his, her left arm wrapping around his neck to pull herself closer to him.
”Maybe after Anarchy, we need to do something… just us. No business talk, no wrestling talk… just forget about everything but us.”
”I’d like that, Asti. But there’s more to the story. The reason why Killjoy has returned….the reason why Kelli is hellbent on destroying you.”
”Tell me… why is it that she’s coming after me. Because I’ve done nothing to her other than fall in love with the most wonderful man who puts up with my shit. Even though he’s the ripe old age of… old.”
A slight giggle escaped from her lips. He manages to crack a smile, a weak one but a smile nonetheless.
”We managed to get Kelli successfully admitted at a facility after her suicide attempt. I wanted a divorce in order to move on with my life but Kelli didn’t want it. I told her she could have whatever she wanted. I would continue paying for her medical bills, living expenses, everything. She didn’t have to raise a finger ever again in life to work in exchange for the divorce. It wasn’t enough for her. She refused to let me...us...go. So our lawyers eventually came to a compromise. It was agreed upon that we would legally part ways, neither of us having anything to do with one another. I would be free to continue on with life and Kelli would still have the rights of being my spouse.”
He held her tight around her waist.
”Do you understand now why she’s after you?”
”Because I threaten her livelihood. You want to move on fully and if you do she would lose her lifeline. Yeah… I kind of get it. I will wait though. I will wait until the end’s of the earth to marry you.”
She wrapped her other arm around his waist.
”Kelli… Killjoy… she isn’t going to scare me away. But she did say some things that bother me a bit in her promo for Revenge. It was like she wasn’t focused on her opponents… but on me.”
”Her lifeline has never been about the money. It’s always been being Mrs. Samson. Now that I have truly found the woman who will take that moniker from her, she is intent on destroying you and everything associated with you.”
”So you, Bill, Mandi… everyone I care about is at risk because someone can’t let go. Well… what if I didn’t change my name and kept Sedin. She could still keep the Samson name.”
She shrugged her shoulders.
”Maybe we can have her committed again because obviously she’s out of her goddamn mind.”
”No. There is no way in hell that I’m going to let her prevent you from becoming Mrs. Samson! No way…”
”We have to figure out something because I don’t know how much more I can take personally. I mean, between her crap and the crap with Misty… I’m going to probably end up in a padded room with a hug yourself jacket.”
Burying his face into her bosom, he squeezes her tightly again.
”I’m sorry for all of this, Asti. I promise I’ll make this all right. Just give me a little bit more time...please?”
”I told you I am willing to wait. I… honestly the only place I feel safe when I’m in the arena is in your office. Maybe… we could hire a bodyguard for me. I’m legit always skeptical about whether or not she’s going to jump out and attack me.”
Samson pulls back to look at her.
”Maybe that’s not a bad idea. Now that she’s an official Anarchist and running with the Black Asylum she’ll be at every broadcast. I could always ask Willia...er...Mongrel to do it. I mean he is you tag partner.”
”That would work if I was a guy. But he can’t go places that I can… like the women’s bathroom for instance. Or if the trainer needs me to remove something so that he can see it. Remember when those Irish/Scottish idiots injured my ribs and I had to take my top off for him to see? Mongrel’s size works… but he needs to be a she.”
”Point taken. I guess that’s something when need to get working on right away then. If there was someone you had in mind, we should definitely see about getting them onboard ASAP.”
”Tomorrow we can start looking. But for right now… it’s time for a happy celebration. And since we didn’t get breakfast… there’s conveniently a Starbucks nearby and they have some pretty good breakfast sandwiches.”
She smiled from ear to ear as she looked into his eyes and her fingers trace figures on his face. He returns her smile and a slight shaking of the head.
”You and that damn Starbucks!”
”Yeah well Dunkin’ Donuts’ coffee is crap. The only thing they have going for them is the doughnuts. Besides… I’m gold status for life practically.”
Smirking, she opens the car door and slides out, letting the soles of her black Converse Chuck Taylors hit the concrete pavement. He follows after, stretching once he’s out.
”I didn’t tell you about what happened with my meeting with Sah’ta Thor the other day, did I?”
The scene slowly fades out to black as he takes her hand and they walk away from the car, Astrid reaching back and remotely locking the car.
