Maple Leaf Square, also known as Jurassic Park; a public square just outside the Scotiabank Arena where diehard fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors frequently congregate during big games, be it those who couldn’t get tickets for sellout home events or those who want to see away games with likeminded people in a big social setting. The place has seen moments of absolute revelry like those of the Toronto Raptors during their championship playoff run in 2019 and those of crushing disappointment like, well… every Maple Leafs playoff run in the past 18 years. On September 6th, 2022 a sold out crowd packed themselves into the arena to see EHWF Chaos live, and those who couldn’t get seats? Well, they watched on the big screen outside in the square.
We cut to the crowd in the final moments of the Showtime Championship bout, the crowd cheering when semi-local girl Romi Moreno wipes out Connor Creed with Surprise Bitch!, then a gasp as she narrowly avoids the Clothesline from Hell before catching him in the Mexican Maple Leaf, the crowded square erupting as she keeps Creed’s shoulders trapped to the mat for the three count! Cheers and chants of “Romi, Romi!” explode forth, echoing off the concrete jungle around them!
Mere moments later ‘The MexiCanadian Mayhem Machine’ charges out the doors of the arena, still in her ring gear, clutching the belt in her hands, staring in a bit of surprise at the mass of humanity gathered before her as the crowd stares back, a brief moment of silence; she didn’t expect them, they didn’t expect her. And then?
“ROMI ROMI ROMI ROMI!”
The crowd erupts again in a mass of cheers as Moreno lifts the belt high overhead with both hands, wild-eyed and grinning like a madwoman. Bruises are already coming visible on her skin but the battered brawler is riding high on adrenaline and endorphins and probably enough caffeine to give a racehorse heart palpitations. With a shrug she charges the crowd, leaping up at the last second and letting them catch her, crowdsurfing across the square as she raises the belt overhead while we fade to black.
