We open in a radio studio, the announcer on one side of the table dressed casually and comfortably, Romi Moreno across from him in a baggy Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs jersey with the EHWF Showtime Championship belt set on the table in front of her. Both are wearing headphones, microphones before them, a producer behind a glass divider counting them down with her fingers before the announcer begins to speak.
Tim: “Welcome back to Breakfast on SEN 1116, Melbourne’s destination for sports radio. Coming up on October 2nd EHWF will be putting on half of their Final Destination event at The G and with us now is the EHWF Showtime Champion ‘The MexiCanadian Mayhem Machine’ Romi Moreno! Romi, big question to start us off: you’re gonna be competing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, so how’s your cricket game?”
Romi laughs a little before shrugging.
Romi: “Full disclosure, I don’t know much about cricket. I did play rugby in high school though, in case that gets me some brownie points with the locals! I specialized in line outs, my teammates would just yeet me in the air to knock the ball back to our girls.”
Tim: “Yeah, that’ll probably get you a few extra cheers. So, how ya liking Australia so far? Jet lag hasn’t been too bad?”
Romi: “Y’know, jet lag’s never really messed me up too bad, not sure why.”
She reaches into a bag at her side, pulling out a massive can of energy drink, cracking it open and taking a long sip.
Romi: “Just lucky I guess. But yeah, loving it so far! Melbourne’s beautiful, the beach is gorgeous, people have been super friendly. I’m absolutely loving it so far. I’m also totally open to suggestions for places to check out around Melbourne while I’m here so feel free to tweet at me if there’s something I should check out!”
Tim: “You might like Peninsula Hot Springs.”
Romi: “I’ll put it on the list!”
Tim: “Something we’ve had a few people ask about you, what exactly is a ‘MexiCanadian’?”
Romi: “Right, so both my parents were born in Mexico and immigrated to Canada. Dad and his parents came up when he was like four years old, mom came for university, they met and one thing led to another and boom, me. So I’m fully Canadian by birth but I’ve got the Mexican blood hence… MexiCanadian. Best of the best parts of North America. Butter tarts and barbacoa. Maple syrup and mole. Poutine and pozole.”
Tim: “Okay, gotcha. So back on September 6th you faced Connor Creed for the Showtime Championship and you pulled off, no offence, a huge upset when you pinned him to win the title in just your second match with EHWF. How’s life as a champion?”
Romi laughs again, then enjoys another sip of cold caffeine.
Romi: “Dude, it’s awesome! Don’t get me wrong, there’s a ton of serious business that goes into being a champion. I’ve been training my ass off to be ready for Zoe in a few days and everyone who comes for this belt after her, but… it’s freakin’ great to be the champ. Pictures, autographs, I threw out the first pitch at a Blue Jays game! I’m living the dream, Tim.”
Tim: "But it can't be all fun and games, right? Like you said, you've been training like mad for your first title defense against Zoe McDraven. How're you feeling going into it?"
Romi: "Physically I feel great, no issues there. As far as the mental game goes… honestly, I feel great there too. I know I can come across all, like, too relaxed for my own good but I know the pressure on me right now. Grand scheme of things, when I'm looking back at my career a decade from now this probably won't be the defining match of it but right now it absolutely is. You said it yourself when you called me beating Creed and winning this gorgeous belt an upset; there were a whole lotta people hoping I'd win but it was mostly just me believing I was gonna get it done. Now I have to go out there against a hell of a talented opponent and prove that I'm not a fluke, that I'm not… who was that guy who beat Mike Tyson back in the day, y'know?"
Tim: "Buster Douglas? Knocked out Tyson in a massive upset to win the heavyweight title, then lost it to Evander Holyfield in his first defense?"
Romi nods vigorously as she sips her drink.
Romi: "Exactly! No offense meant to Buster of course, the man can always say he's been to the top of the mountain and most people can't, and I can do the same thing as Showtime champ. But I'm not just here for a 'hit it and quit it', Tim. This ain't no one night stand. Me and this belt are getting real serious, like I've already introduced it to mom and dad and I feel the weight of every ounce of pressure on me and then some because trust, I'm putting all kinds of pressure on me too. Zoe's world class, but I didn't fly halfway around the world to be a one hit wonder."
Tim: "And on the topic of Zoe McDraven, after your title win there was definitely some intensity in that staredown. Is personal animosity going to be a factor on the 2nd?"
Romi shrugs, sipping her drink again.
Romi: "Let me be totally clear, I don't hate Zoe or anything. Like, right now she definitely isn't on the list of people who are gonna get handmade cards and homemade peanut butter fudge for Christmas, but like… if I was driving along the highway and saw her car in the ditch I'd stop to see if she needed help, y'know? We aren’t besties but I respect her. And I can respect her and still be ready to choke her out with a Sonoran Lullaby or crack her ribs with the Heartstopper. Because that's what it means to be champion, doesn't matter if it's your best friend or worst enemy or anyone in between across the ring from you when that bell rings, you gotta be ready to rip through 'em like a chainsaw. That’s where I’m at with Zoe right now. I respect her but come October 2nd she’s going down.”
Tim: “So no hard feelings on your side.”
Romi: “No hard feelings, just gonna be lots of hard hittings.”
Romi grins a little and enjoys more of her drink.
Tim: “Alright, we need to throw it to some commercials and when we come back we’ll be giving away two tickets for Final Destination! Thanks for coming in today Romi!”
Romi: “Thanks for having me! Final Destination, October 2nd, live in Melbourne and Melbourne Juniour, aka Chicago, don’t miss it!”
The producer signals they’re off the air and Romi removes her headset, shaking hands with the announcer as we fade to black.
