Katelyn De La Vega just won her first championship belt in a major wrestling promotion and even managed to speak to the largest crowd she had ever seen, keeping it together despite the churning in her guts. The brave face she sported lasted all of five seconds after her confident stride down the aisle and through the curtains. She could feel the turn of her stomach and placed a hand over it to try and calm the quivering sensation of her lunch trying to make it's way up her throat.
A production manager by the monitors waved at her with a smile.
"Good job, kid," he said.
That was all it took and Kate immediately felt the bile hit the back of her tongue. In a flash she hurried over to a trash can, her head whipping forward with enough force to drape her hair over it like a tent. So violently did she shudder as her meal from earlier evacuated her system forcefully into the trash. Embarrassment flooded over her and she lifted her head up, and wiping her mouth, all eyes on her. With wide eyes, she stared back at everyone through the locks of brunette hair hanging in her face.
"S-sorry," Katelyn said meekly.
It was with hurried steps that she quickly rushed to the locker room. She wanted to bury her head in a hole somewhere, feeling utterly ashamed of herself. What were people going to say about her? Oh the new girl is so nervous that she threw up due to her crippling anxiety when it came to talking in front of large crowds? Perhaps they would think she cannot handle the pressure, that she will fold quickly. The sudden chirp of her phone gets her attention, taking her mind off of the humiliation of her own nerves briefly.
She reached into the bag and pulled the phone up, reading three letters; LVD. Those are the initials of her mentor, Lexus Van Drachenberg. She swiped her finger across the screen to answer the call.
"Hi Ms. Drachenberg."
"Good evening, Katelyn. I see you now are a champion for a prestigious wrestling company now. Congratulations," said the husky voiced Lexus.
"Thank you, ma'am."
"Now comes the hardest part; Keeping it."
Kate nodded her head slowly.
"I understand."
"I am quite proud of you, Ms. De La Vega. You have yet to disappoint and seem to have a very bright future ahead of you."
Her face flushed a bit.
"I threw up after the match..."
There is a momentary pause by Lexus that was then followed by a very soft chortle.
"Everyone saw it," Katelyn added.
"Wrestling has always been easier than public speaking, my young apprentice. This too shall pass."
"It was all so incredible and overwhelming. I-I almost couldn't speak."
"I will assist you in this," Lexus assured her and added, "You have done better in your second year than some wrestlers have done in five. You have had quite a remarkable run."
"Thank you, Ms. Drachenberg."
"May your ego never swell, Katelyn. People less talented and capable than you have gone to ruin because their pride and vanity grew larger than their humility. I do not wish to see you fall prey to the pitfalls that I have."
"I won't let you down."
"It is not me that you have to worry about in that regard. I only hope that you never let yourself, down."
Kate absorbed the words, pondering them for a moment.
"Rest well and enjoy your new accolade. We will meet upon your return and start on the next level of your training. Goodnight."
Lexus ended the call before Kate had a chance to respond.
"I ah... oh never mind."
She sagged on the bench, leaning back against the locker door and sighing softly. What a night indeed. She looked down at the golden belt around her waist with a small, proud smile.
