New Orleans, Louisiana
Smoothie King Center - Backstage
David couldn't have been more than two steps from the entrance to the main-roster locker room - two steps from changing out of his ring gear, heading back to the hotel, and going to bed - when he was waylaid by Alexander Corvis, film crew in tow.
Corvis: David! David - a moment of your time?
David: I...
Furrowing his brow in disdain, he glanced up and down the corridor they were standing in. He saw no one - if he had to guess, everyone was either out at ringside in wake of the chaotic ending to Mayhem, or watching the aftermath on the backstage viewing monitors. Shrugging, he turned back to Corvis.
David: Sure, why not?
Corvis: Fantastic, thank you.
Corvis motioned to his accompanying film crew, who set up their equipment and got into position with practiced, professional ease. Corvis himself moved to stand beside David, the two of them standing with their backs to the wall just outside the locker room whose sanctuary David so desperately sought. The cameraman began a hushed countdown, motioning to Corvis with his fingers.
Cameraman: Three... two... one.
Corvis: Ladies and gentlemen... my guest at this time, number-one contender to the EHWF Championship, David Gideon Smith.
He turned to David.
Corvis: David, you continue to regain momentum following your loss at Scars and Stripes and leading into your rematch with Silver Kazama at Aftermath - you soundly defeated Chris DeAngelo last week, and earlier tonight you managed to get a win over T.Q. Smooth, avenging a loss to him from several months ago. This past week, things between you and Smooth became rather heated - care to comment on the animosity between the two of you, and how the outcome of tonight's match might factor in?
David bowed his head slightly, bringing a hand up to his face and tittering for a moment.
David: T.Q. Smooth... he had quite a bit to say to me this past week. That he's smarter than me; that he's better at this than I am; that there's nothing in my arsenal capable of putting him down, and that tonight he was going to, for lack of a more appropriate term, destroy me. All that was what T.Q. Smooth said, what T.Q. Smooth thought. What ended up actually happening, however...
He looked pointedly at Corvis.
David: I played him like a violin. I outmatched him, outsmarted him, and outmaneuvered him. T.Q. Smooth didn't have the capacity to stay aware of his surroundings, didn't have the good sense to not antagonize those not involved in our contest, and as a result, I didn't need the Spear. I didn't need Sovereign. Because T.Q. Smooth hasn't mastered this sport like I have, hasn't conquered this sport like I have, all I needed to defeat him was a simple schoolboy pin - you know, the kind most wrestlers learn in their second or third week of training. For all his ego, all his talk, tonight I proved why I'm going to be the EHWF Champion again in a few weeks' time, and why the once-great T.Q. Smooth is dinking around in the lower midcard.
Corvis: Speaking of that impending title match... care to comment on the way things went down at tonight's contract signing? Specifically, how tonight's events might impact your relationship with either Silver Kazama or Michael Rissi?
David sighed, rolling his eyes.
David: Y'know, I -
He stopped short, sensing that someone had approached while he was speaking and was now standing behind him, and turned around.
David: ... well. Look who it is.
